World Hosting Day Asia 2015

Cloud and security issues were the two key themes that emerged at World Hosting Day Asia 2015. Held on 28th August 2015 at Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel in Singapore, the event attracted more than 350 attendees from across Asia, including 15 technology partners from around the world.

The challenges and opportunities of the hosting reseller business was another focus area that generated a lot of discussion among the attendees.

Speaking on the opportunities in Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) and Backup as a Service, Danny Chan, regional sales manager, Double Take, at Vision Solutions, said these services figured prominently in many companies’ plans for the cloud. The reason for this is that disaster recovery is very costly to implement in-house, with the need to have physical space, as well as the hardware and network in place.

According to Chan, the important thing that customers are looking for in DRaaS is that the solution must be hardware and platform agnostic, and application and virtualisation agnostic. It must also be able to provide multi-site support and also support for public and private clouds. Customers want to be able to optimise their workloads between the server, hypervisor or cloud, and to migrate “from anywhere to anywhere to anything” with minimal disruption.

Some of the other speakers who addressed the cloud opportunity included Ronino Tabanan, Senior Presales Consultant (Singapore and Asia Emerging Markets), Acronis, who spoke about how resellers could accelerate growth with Acronis Cloud Innovation; Magnus Hult, chief executive officer of Atomia, who presented on business models for selling the cloud; and Antonio Piraino, Chief Technology Officer, ScienceLogic, who spoke about managed Amazon Web Services and Azure services for hosting providers.
