ST Electronics, the electronics arm of ST Engineering, has won its sixth Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project in Guangzhou, China. The Guangzhou-Foshan Line (GFL) contract worth RMB53.6 million (approximately S$11.7 million) requires the provision of Platform Screen Doors (PSD) for the GFL which will run 32.3 km from Kuiqi Station in Foshan, to Lijiao station in Guangzhou, in the Guangdong province.

The contract is jointly awarded by Guangzhou Metro Corporation and Foshan Metro Corporation. Work commences immediately and is expected to be completed by the second half of 2010.

This is the first PSD project for ST Electronics in China. The PSD system will span 21 stations and include 42 sets of PSDs. The PSDs ensure commuters’ safety as they act as a barrier to the tracks and are integrated with the systems to synchronise with the opening of the train doors.

Under this contract, ST Electronics will be responsible for the system design, supply of equipment and software, installation, testing and commissioning.

“This new award brings our track record in Guangzhou to a total of six projects. It certainly is a reflection of our customers’ confidence in the quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of our rail electronics solutions,” said Seah Moon Ming, President, ST Electronics.

ST Electronics’ first rail project in Guangzhou was in 2003 when it won a contract to provide a Passenger Information Service (PIS) System for its Line 3. This was then followed by Automated Fare Collection (AFC) System for Line 4 in 2004 and Lines 2, 8 and 4 extensions in 2006 and for Line 3 in 2008. Recently in April 2009, ST Electronics was awarded a contract to provide an Integrated Supervisory Control System.

Other rail electronics systems projects in China include PIS Systems for Nanjing’s Line 2 and Shenzhen’s Line 1. In 2006, the company provided an integrated Traffic Command Centre system for the rapidly growing Beijing mass transit network, the first of its kind in China that now provides Beijing with the benefits of an efficient centralised network-based operation. To date, three of these projects have been completed with the remaining projects to be delivered up till 2012.

ST Electronics was also recently awarded contracts by the Krungthep Thanakom for the supply of an AFC System for the Bangkok Transit System Silom Line Extension and by Changchun Railway Vehicle Co. Limited for the supply of a Train-borne Communications System for the Hong Kong Mass Transit System.
