Enterprise gateway security company Secure Computing has announced that its TrustedSource Lab has observed a significant increase in spam activities in Asia and across the globe, from the beginning of August, peaking at 53 per cent above July's daily average and 70 per cent above June's average.

Spam levels hit a record high of 88 per cent of all email in August, with 11 per cent of all spam being made up of the new PDF spam, the report said.

Asia has not been spared from this recent swell in spam volume. Secure Computing's TrustedSource Lab has observed an increase of approximately 25 per cent of spam volume in Asia, as compared to the daily average in July.

The recent spike in spam levels, according to the report, is attributed primarily to the ongoing Storm worm epidemic, increase in attachment-based stock spam in PDF, Excel and ZIP format and web-hosted malware in the form of fake greeting card emails.
