Symantec recently announced a partnership with Singapore Polytechnic’s (SP) School of Media and Info-Communications Technology to cultivate Singapore’s next generation of cyber-professionals.

Students at Singapore Polytechnic’s Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM) will be trained in the institution’s newly set up SP-Symantec Infocomm Security Lab, which was officially launched on 21 November.

“As cyber threats continue to grow and become more complex, it is more important than ever to remain vigilant and informed on the evolving threat landscape. The key success factor is having well-trained people to sharpen Singapore’s defences against the malicious codes and unwanted content out there,” said Darric Hor, General Manager, Symantec Singapore.

Symantec's objective, he said, is to ensure that the right caliber of security certified IT professionals enter the workforce. “The Memorandum of Co-operation that we have signed with Singapore Polytechnic signals strong commitment from Symantec to protect and contribute to fulfilling Singapore’s vision as a regional hub for infocomm security,” he added.

Students enrolled in SP's DISM will be trained in this facility, by Symantec's security experts, to understand and master the requirements for planning, installing, configuring and managing Symantec antivirus, anti-spam, anti-spyware and firewall solutions.

Symantec will support the Infocomm Security Lab with resources such as its expertise and manpower, consultation services, as well as software and courseware.

All DISM students from Year 1 to 3 are eligible for training. The Symantec training courses will take place from time to time at the Lab, and students and lecturers who have completed these courses will be awarded certificates.

Symantec and SP have also successfully conducted security training for a group of 15 students and 6 lecturers from 10 to 14 September this year.

Additionally, Symantec has sponsored the Symantec-Singapore Polytechnic Scholarship, a bond-free scholarship which covers three years of tuition grants, for the top DISM student. 18-year-old Teh Qin Chuan, who is currently the top student in DISM, was awarded this scholarship on 21 November.

Song Nay Hay, Director of School of Media and Info-communications Technology, Singapore Polytechnic, said that the security laboratory is an excellent learning platform for our students, especially those from DISM.

“These students have an opportunity to learn about the latest security investigation techniques and experience the state of the art technologies right here in the Polytechnic.”
