Fujitsu has created
"Fujitsu Islands" within the Second Life three-dimensional virtual world
operated by Linden Lab of the US.
The Fujitsu Islands were designed to provide a new venue for creative
interaction with customers. The Islands will introduce Fujitsu history,
products, and services in an interactive 3D world, as well as promote the
results of various collaborative research projects, such as the brain
function research being undertaken with government agency Riken and Japan
Shogi Association.
Linden Lab was founded in 1999 by Philip Rosedale to create a revolutionary
new form of shared experience, where individuals jointly inhabit a 3D
landscape and build the world around them. This experience, known as Second
Life, has a rapidly growing population of Residents from over 200 countries
around the globe, who are creating and inhabiting a virtual world of their
own design.
The 3D virtual world Second Life has captured the interest of millions of
Internet users around the world, with more than 10 million global
registrants and a fast-rising number of subscribers in Japan.
Fujitsu Islands will act as a new venue to interact with customers and to
evaluate the impact of this cutting-edge information technology and
communication means on business. Fujitsu's ultimate objective is to create
new value for customers using this technology.
In addition to Company announcements, promotions, and e-commerce services,
Fujitsu will collaborate with customers in various fields to host
experimental projects at Fujitsu
Islands. The fruits of these projects will seed the development of new
products, services, and forms of communication.
Fujitsu plans to broaden the application of 3D virtual platforms beyond
Second Life and into various areas of its product and services businesses
with the aim of creating new business opportunities in partnership with
customers.
